Habitat for Humanity is pleased to say that Golden West Radio is providing the Moose Jaw chapter with all of the proceeds collected from The Star Seeker project.

Star Seeker was created to support local musicians via Golden West Radio's Canadian Content Development funds.  These funds are dispersed to local people associated with music.  This year, Golden West wanted to create an event to find and showcase local talent that make music that could also get airplay on local radio stations. They also wanted to create an opportunity to help a local non-profit organization and, this year, they chose Habitat For Humanity.

At showcase events held earlier this year, a panel of music-industry judges selected five local acts "Friend Friend", "Ghost of a Ghost", "Penny Buhr-Johnson", "Jonas Peter" and "Dan Arnold" as winners of free studio time with Jawbone Studios.  Each act then recorded two songs for the "Star Seeker" compilation.  The CDs (which will retail for $10 each) will be released to the public at a special launch event at Jake's at the Park Saturday, May 12th. All proceeds from CD sales will be donated directly to the Moose Jaw chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

In conjunction with the CD Release Party, Habitat for Humanity will be hosting a steak night at Jake's at the Park, from 5-8pm, the same evening.  Tickets can be purchased for $14 at Investment Planning Counsel (1021A 9th Ave. N.W., Moose Jaw) or by calling Jocelyn Paulhus at 690.7168.  Steak night tickets will also be available at the door.

Habitat for Humanity set up shop at Moose Jaw's "Focus On Trade" show Saturday and Sunday April 28th and 29th. With our sights set on our third home build, our goal was to continue building our profile in the community.  The event served as an excellent opportunity to make contact with countless supporters as well as past, present and future volunteers.  "Thank You" to Mid-West Efficiency for sponsoring our booth and to all those who set up, tore down and gave up their weekend to help get our message to the masses. We are also looking forward to working with the many people who signed up to volunteer going forward!

7 months ago, Ko Lo Ta and his wife Lu Lu Paw (pictured above) started building a house.  Today, that house is now their home.  On April 20th, Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw was proud to present the husband, wife and their two sons, Her Kaw Htoo and Paul Brett, with the keys to their new life.  The family of four, Burmese immigrants who arrived in Moose Jaw four years ago, were required to put in 500 hours of "sweat equity" toward the construction of their home.  This task requires a huge committment and it was a challenge not only met, but exceeded.  And then some.

With that committment fulfilled, Habitat for Humanity will now provide the family with an affordable, no-interest mortgage on the new home.  "It's such an important, life-changing, thing and it's such a good thing for the community," said Dennis Coutts, Habitat for Humanity Regina/Moose Jaw CEO.  "I hope the City of Moose Jaw is proud of themselves for coming out and making this happen".  Each Habitat for Humanity home build is a huge undertaking, requiring extensive fundraising as well as corporate and community support.  More recently, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation has also chipped in to the tune of $50,000 on 20 projects around the province.

Construction on Moose Jaw's third Habitat fr Humanity home (located at 905 Stadacona Street East) will be underway soon.  Family selection for that project has already taken place. "We just encourage people to continue to volunteer," added Coutts.  "Not everyone has to swing a hammer, there's a number of phases".

Habitat for Humanity has taken the next step to help build more homes with the help of deserving partner families in Moose Jaw.  The organization has partnered with members of the business community to collect your pennies!  Our goal is to bring in 10 million coins - that's enough to complete our next home build.

Ten million pennies will form a six foot, by six foot, by six foot cube – and will weigh 55,000 lbs and if the pennies were stacked one on top of the other they would reach 9.8 miles high.

Crown Shred & Recycling and Culligan have stepped up to the plate, providing us with blue bins and water jugs (pictured above) to collect the coins.  You can find them at the following locations around the city:

Home Building Centre
Westrum Lumber
Carpet One
Great West Auto
Gemmell's Shoes
BMO Bank of Montreal
The Medicine Shoppe
Folgizan Insurance
Investment Planning Counsel
Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce

Habitat for Humanity chapters around the province - and the country - are calling on you to gather up your pennies and bring them to us! The idea is to raise "millions and millions of pennies", allowing us to build homes with and for deserving families who are unable to secure a conventional mortgage.

“We have been tossing this idea around for awhile and decided, in light of the federal government announcement that the penny will not be in production as of this fall, now is the time," said Dennis Coutts, Habitat Regina/Moose Jaw CEO.  "Canada’s Finance Minister himself said for people to donate their pennies to charity”, Coutts stated.

"In Moose Jaw, we would like to collect at least 2 million pennies," added local volunteer Lee Guse. "That would give us enough money to complete our third build.  But, for example, Regina is hoping to raise 10 million pennies.  I say, if the Warriors beat the Pats in the playoffs, Moose Jaw can beat Regina at collecting pennies, can't we?"

Penny drop-off locations in Moose Jaw include Home Building Centre, BMO Bank of Montreal, Gemmell's Shoes and Investment Planning Counsel.  People can also donate unwanted pennies at the Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce (88 Saskatchewan Street East).

Ten million pennies, for example, equates to $100,000 – the cost of bricks and mortar to build a home for a hard-working Habitat for Humanity family.

“Ten million pennies will form a six foot, by six foot, by six foot cube – and will weigh 55,000 lbs and if the pennies were stacked one on top of the other they would reach 9.8 miles high. Facilitating a fundraiser like this will be a ton of work (actually it's 25 tons) but if we can help another hard-working, low-income family get into home-ownership it will be more than worth it,” said Dennis Coutts.

Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw will be set up at Focus on Trade at Mosaic Place Saturday, April 28th and Sunday, April 29th.  You're encouraged to come and find us, donate a few pennies and learn about exciting volunteer and home ownership opportunities right here at home!
